Update from Your RV Workers On Wheels Newsletter Editor

I read on a working-on-the-road forum that RVers need to find campground jobs eight months prior to the work season. That's plain and simple BS. We have job listings coming in now for the summer season. That's about two months out, less in some places. Year round, we get ads looking for workers to start immediately.

If lining up the job you'll do a year from now makes you feel secure, that's a reason to do it. There are places that offer contracts nine months or a year ahead of time. But, it certainly isn't necessary.

A banner for a job fair spreads across the highway, from one side of the street to the other. It is not an RVer or work-while-camping specific event. It is a community job fair open to anyone. But, what do you bet that many of the jobs will be summer, seasonal jobs? My guess is the vast majority of them will be temporary positions starting late spring and ending late summer. Community job fairs are excellent places to find jobs at tourist related businesses, including B&B's, fishing charters, resorts, retail stores, restaurants, and hotels. They are also good places to find jobs in other seasonal industries, such as construction and fishing.

Wherever you are in your work and travels, we wish you joy and prosperity,

Coleen

Working RVer Tip - Ask Your RVing Friends and Neighbors

Ask your RVing friends where they are working and where they have worked in the past. They may tell you about positions they highly recommend. Oftentimes, RVers are very happy with a job and employer, but they don't plan to return next year, simply because they want to experience something new.

Working on the Railroad - A Steam Train Tourist Attraction

What little boy doesn't dream of working on the railroad? As a full-time RVer, Bob had the chance to work on a steam train for several summers. In today's article, he shares what he did as the "wake-up fireman." His fascination with trains and his working knowledge of steam power helped him land this particular job. In his article, however, he also talks about many other positions at the railroad. Some of those positions call for specialized skills and others simply require a good attitude and the desire to work on the railroad.

Your Working While RVing Questions Answered

Short Term Jobs That Allow for Frequent Travel

~~ Jim asks: Are there jobs for RVers for short time commitments? If so, where can I find them? There are so many work camper jobs, but all I have seen go against our full timing goal, which is to travel.

~~ I answered in part: Here are some ideas:
  • Work for a temporary staffing service.
  • Work fairs, RV rallies, home shows, rodeos, trade shows, and other events that only last a few days.
  • Work for a carnival or circus.
  • Create jobs that take you from campground to campground, or town to town.
Here are links to a couple articles on our website that will give you more ideas and more detailed answer.
