Update from Your RV Workers On Wheels Newsletter Editor

The Job Center in our small community has nearly 300 positions it cannot fill. The spokesperson says they can't find people who meet basic qualifications. Those qualifications? Passing a drug test and a background test. And, knowing what it describes as "very basic" math. The news report mentions three employers in particular that are looking for help: Walgreens, Walmart, and Fred Meyer.

When applying for jobs, including campground jobs, keep in mind the most fundamental, basic job qualifications. You operated a cash register last summer while volunteering at the local thrift shop? That's important to a campground owner with a camp store. Your Ivy League degree from 30 years ago? Not so much. Think basic and relevant.

Wherever you are in your work and travels, we wish you joy and prosperity,

Coleen

Working RVer Tip

A government run campground may have a published official procedure for selecting volunteer camp hosts and park staff. That does not mean they follow it. There are often exceptions to rules. If you want to work in a particular park, talk to the ranger, volunteer coordinator, or whoever is in charge at that park. Let them know you want the position. Ask them what you need to do to get it.

Working RVer Tip - Keeping Track of Expenses

Put all of your purchases on a credit card and you will have an easy to read, concise list of your expenditures. It will show the dates of the purchases. In many instances, it will also show the location. If you are keeping track of your expenses and whereabouts for income tax purposes, this provides another layer of documentation.

Tour Guide Tips: Six Tips for Being a Great Guide

These tour guide tips come from a Dan Austin, a tour company operator who has over 20 years in the business. He clearly lays out what skills, abilities, and characteristics are important to him.

"A great guide can make a successful trip just as quickly as an average or sub-par guide can ruin one," says Austin, co-founder and Director of Austin-Lehman Adventures (ALA), an active tour company based in Billings, Montana.

Here are the top traits ALA looks for in selecting tour guides:

1. Focused with laser-like precision on making sure that guests feel like a V.I.P.

2. Naturally intuitive and has the innate ability to foretell what a guest is thinking or wanting.

3. Spontaneous and can seamlessly deal with the unexpected, both pleasant and potentially disastrous. This means having a Plan B ready in case of such things as sudden weather changes, lodging snafus, and road delays.
